COMPOSITION
Each gram contains 50 mg Acyclovir in a water-miscible base.

PROPERTIES
Acyclovir is an anti-viral agent, which is highly active in vitro against herpes simplex virus, Types I & II and varicella Zoster virus. Acyclovir is phosphorylated after entry into herpes-infected cells to the active compound acyclovir triphosphate; this is dependent on the presence of viral coded thymidine kinase. Acyclovir triphosphate acts as an inhibitor of, and substrate for, the herpes-specified DNA polymerase preventing further viral DNA synthesis without affecting normal cellular processes.

CLOVIR cream is indicated for the treatment of herpes simplex virus infection of the skin including initial and recurrent genital herpes and herpes labialis.

DOSAGE AND ADMINISTRATION
For adults and children, CLOVIR cream should be applied five times daily. CLOVIR cream should be applied as early as possible after the start of an infection. Treatment should be continued for five days and can be extended up to 10 days if healing has not occurred.

Hypersensitivity to Acyclovir. In pregnancy and lactation, experience in humans is limited, so the use of CLOVIR cream should be considered only when the potential benefits outweigh the possibility of unknown risks.

In vitro and in vivo studies indicate that acyclovir does not pose a genetic risk to man.
