Gentamicin Sulphate

COMPOSITION
Each
1 ml of sterile GENTAM eye/ear drops contains Gentamicin Sulphate
equivalent to 3 mg of Gentamicin. Each 1 gm of GENTAM sterile eye
ointment contains Gentamicin Sulphate equivalent to 3 mg of Gentamicin.

ACTIONS
Gentamicin
Sulphate, an aminoglycoside, is a bactericidal against a wide variety
of pathogenic Gram-negative and some Gram-positive bacteria, staphylococcal
species have responded favorably to Gentamicin Sulphate.

INDICATIONS
GENTAM
eye/ear drops & eye ointment are indicated in the topical treatment
of infections caused by susceptible bacteria of the external structures
of the eye such as conjunctivitis, keratitis and keratoconjunctivitis,
acute meibomianitis, dacryocystitis and corneal ulcers, GENTAM eye
ointment may also be used for the prevention of ocular infection
after removal of a corneal or conjuctival foreign body. GENTAM eye/ear
drops is also indicated for treatment of bacterial infection of
otitis externa .

DOSAGE
AND ADMINISTRATION
Eye: Instill one
or two drops of GENTAM eye/ear drops into the affected eye every
four hours or two drops once every hour in severe infections. GENTAM
eye ointment is applied in a sufficient amount two to four times
a day and increased up to eight times a day in severe infections,
frequency is reduced accordingly as improvement occurs.
Ear: Thoroughly clean the ear canal of cerumen and debris. The initial
dosage of GENTAM eye/ear drops is three or four drops, two to four
times a day .

ADVERSE
REACTIONS
Transient eye irritation has been reported

CONTRAINDICATIONS
GENTAM eye/ear drops and eye ointment are
contraindicated in patients with hypersensitivity to any of their
components. GENTAM eye/ear drops are also contraindicated in patients
with disrupted tympanic membranes.

PRECAUTIONS
Prolonged use of topical antibiotics may give
rise to overgrowth of nonsusceptible micro-organisms and fungi.
Should this occur, or if irritation or hypersensitivity to GENTAM
eye/ear drops or eye ointment develop, discontinue its use and institute
appropriate therapy. To avoid contamination and cross infection,
don't use the same bottle of medication for treatment of otic and
ocular infections. When GENTAM eye/ear drops are used locally on
the ear, potential eighth cranial nerve toxicity should be considered.
Safety and effectiveness for use of GENTAM eye/ear drops in children
less than six years of age have not been established. Safety in
pregnant woman has not been established. Cautions should be exercised
when GENTAM eye/ear drops are administered to nursing women since
it is unknown whether their components are excreted in human milk
.
